ATHLETE PERFORMANCE & INJURY PREVENTION

The Athlete Injury Pathway

PREVENTION → RETURN TO PLAY

Six stages from prevention to return to play, with the criteria that clear an athlete to advance.

01Ongoing

Prevention & Readiness

  • Preseason screening
  • Daily load & wellness
  • Targeted prehab
  • Athlete education

Cleared when

Cleared for full unrestricted training

020–72 hrs

Injury Event & Acute Care

  • Immediate on-field assessment
  • PEACE protocol
  • Red-flag screen
  • Document mechanism

Cleared when

Injury graded — no red flags present

03Week 1

Diagnosis & Recovery Plan

  • Clinical exam & imaging
  • Set baseline
  • Multidisciplinary plan
  • Set milestones

Cleared when

Plan agreed — pain controlled — athlete educated

04Weeks 2–16

Rehabilitation & Reconditioning

  • Restore range of motion
  • Rebuild aerobic base
  • Weekly objective testing
  • Retrain movement

Cleared when

Full ROM — pain-free daily activity — ≥ 80% strength symmetry

05Weeks 12–20

Return to Training

  • Graded running & cutting
  • Sport-specific skills
  • Ramp load by ACWR
  • Rebuild confidence

Cleared when

Full practice tolerated — ≥ 90% limb symmetry index

06Week 20+

Return to Play & Performance

  • Medical clearance
  • Staged minutes restriction
  • Performance data
  • Debrief

Cleared when

Cleared to compete — monitored for reinjury risk

Continuous loop, not a finish line — every return-to-play outcome feeds back into screening and load management for the next cycle.

Clinical decisions remain with the supervising medical team.
